Dr Mats tip of the day - 040 - Disruption:society connections and values may save the day

So in a fast paced environment that is full of Disruption there will be an ongoing issue for management in how to monitor and manage issues and decisions as they arise. I have discussed previously that ethics and behaviours may be important in lieu of procedures and policies that may not be able to react quick enough for the future age.

Today we raise an alternate way to monitor and control emerging issues as fast paced and uncertain Disruption emerges - try society connections and values !

If your staff are trained and cognizant of your societies values and expected values, truly understand and align with the society then it may be that your staff will make good decisions in uncertainty without the need for extensive policies and procedures. Sure it may still be better to have the written documents at some point but it is unlikely that a large or small organization will react quick enough.

A number of corporate issues with banks and other institutions may have been avoided if their staff had been given the delegation to stay on "the morale high ground" and do what society expects rather than what the law allows (or what they think they can get away with). These boundaries are grey and unclear, yet people know what their neighbours, their children, their friends would expect as a whole. These boundaries operate daily and are unwritten yet generally people respect and adhere to a wide variety of societal values and beliefs.

Imagine if you said to your staff to "stay moral, keep with your neighbours values, do not steal/dominate others and prevent embarrassment for this organization" - the message would be broad and unwritten of course - yet in times of opportunity and uncertainty the message may assist your staff in deciding to take opportunity or to refrain, merely on societal values. If nothing else they may be able to highlight key issues as they arise on society values before they take advantage and destroy value in your organization.

Consider telling your staff and all your stakeholders that you want to be socially responsible, you want to be valued for keeping up standards and not taking needless over reach or manipulation. When Disruption arises you may be surprised by how the lack of policies and procedures on the new environment did not matter as your staff made good socially responsible decisions in the gap.
