Globalization has resulted in inter connectivity of trade- social media, technology and internet have increased the speed of information. Disruption will occur fast, with uncertainty and will affect organizational Management and Leadership in significant ways (have discussed that previously). This will also affect staff and processes unlike ever before.
Your organization should sit and work out a skills gap analysis for your organization in light of this increasing Disruptive environment. We have daily tweets from presidents to consider, trade wars and new technology/robots emerging - so much consider if you are managing or leading and organization today.
A skills gap analysis will consider how a Disruption (or many simultaneously) may stretch and change your staffing requirements. If robots emerge quickly in your industry you will likely end up with a smaller workforce - this may seriously impact those that like to work in a people environment, may require more data and problem solving skills. Alternately a trade war may impact your procurement or your sales programmes - staff may need to work quickly in gathering data and understanding of changes. Will you cancel a deal just off the back of a presidential tweet ?
Your staff may need additional flexibility in order to cope with the constant change and uncertainty. Staff may need to work with more data and yet less certainty (remember fake news), they may also need to consider some investigative and decision making skills. If you sit in your strategy meeting next and do not discuss Disruption and skills required then you may have a major gap in your preparations.
Boards may also need to consider asking management about their Disruption planning, their skills gaps and changes resulting. Again failure to consider may leave your board members open to claims in terms of their skills or appropriate preparations.
There is much to consider in Disruption (from whatever source) - so consider your staffing skills today ! Consider my previous blogs on Disruption as multiple effects are likely to require the attention of Leaders and Managers.
If you are a Leader or seeking to be one in the future - you need to read, read, read about Disruption NOW ! Those that fail to understand and adjust will fall behind.
